The Guide to Diamonds

At Richards Jewelers, we believe that purchasing a diamond should be an exciting and informed experience. Whether you're selecting an engagement ring, a special gift, or treating yourself, understanding the characteristics of a diamond is key to finding the perfect stone. The quality and value of a diamond are determined by four essential criteria known as the 4 Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

The 4 Cs of Diamonds

Each "C" plays a crucial role in determining a diamond’s beauty and worth. Here's a closer look at each:

1. Cut

The cut of a diamond refers to how well it has been shaped and faceted. More than just the diamond’s shape (such as round, oval, or princess), the cut influences how light interacts with the stone. A well-cut diamond will reflect light in a way that creates maximum brilliance and sparkle, often referred to as "fire."

Diamonds are graded on their cut from Excellent to Poor. A well-cut diamond will appear brighter and more radiant, making this factor one of the most important in determining a diamond’s beauty.

2. Color

The color of a diamond is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Truly colorless diamonds are incredibly rare and, as a result, highly valuable. However, most diamonds have slight color variations that may be subtle to the untrained eye.

The less color a diamond has, the higher its grade and value. For those seeking an icy, clear stone, diamonds in the D-F range are ideal. For a warm glow at a more accessible price point, diamonds graded G-J can also be beautiful options.

3. Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of internal or external imperfections, called inclusions and blemishes, respectively. The fewer imperfections, the higher the clarity grade. Diamonds are graded on a scale from Flawless (no visible imperfections under 10x magnification) to Included (imperfections visible to the naked eye).

While flawless diamonds are incredibly rare, most imperfections are so small that they can only be seen under magnification, meaning diamonds with lower clarity grades can still be stunning to the eye.

4. Carat Weight

Carat weight measures a diamond’s size. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. While larger diamonds are more rare and valuable, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have vastly different appearances based on their cut, color, and clarity.

It’s important to balance carat weight with the other Cs to find a diamond that offers the best value for your budget while still delivering the size and presence you’re looking for.
